How fast would a knife wound to the kidneys kill you?

Say a bowie knife was stabbed into your right kidney and twisted a bit. How fast would you die? Minutes? Longer? Would it be from blood loss or something else? Would you p out first, or die instantly? I'm asking because it happened as a cliffhanger on a TV show I watched recently, and I want to know how realistic it is that he's really dead.
